Cheap & Cheerful - Planting an Arborvitae Ball

Workerman and I found this lovely terracotta pot at a garage sale for $8. Thrilllling! I covet these pots at our frou-frou garden places, but can never bring myself to shell out the big bucks to buy one.

I wanted to choose the "perfect plant" for this dandy of a pot, so I've been hemming and hawing for several days about what to pick. Perennials this time, no annuals. I'm done with (and possibly over) annuals. <--- story for another day

I had my heart set on allium, but Mr. said he didn't like them and thought them "too spindly."
So, while he sat in the Relaxation Station at Gertens (sipping his iced coffee in the shade), I walked my butt around the evergreen section - rethinking my plan. I love and admire all of Deborah Silver's boxwood/topiary plantings, but boxwoods scare me. I'm not ready to make the leap into obsessive pruning, pinching and snipping, but I wanted to find something along the same lines... a la Deborah Silver Awesomeness.

After several failed plant presentations to Workerman, I found Thuja occidentalis 'Hetz Midget' or, as I like to call it - cute and tiny Arborvitae ball. Workerman approved.

Hetz will maintain its ballin' shape without any pruning and it is known as a tough and adaptable plant; great for a container specimen.

I planted it last night and photographed its sad state of affairs for you. I know it will take a while for it to grow into its magnificent globe form (hello, dream world), but I'm happy with my choice. It was cheap and cheerful, and Deborah Sliver-esque. Kinda'...

  1. I may have already posted a comment, but I'm not sure it went through. Anywho,
Looks great! Good find! Although you shouldn't be afraid of boxwood! They are such easy plants to care for. Even when they're no clipped to perfection they are still very lovely, buxom shrubs.

  2. Oh, and also...
Couldn't you plant a few allium bulbs in there too? Then a few weeks a year it'd be a little disco.

  3. I LOVE this project! The pot is amazing and the vision for the ball in the pot is so perfect. I agree with Stephen's disco sentiment!! And I too am afraid of Boxwood - but kind of itching to get my foxy boxy on. They are so cute. Way to go. Can't wait to see it as it grows!
