Hibiscus

The exotic beauty of a Hibiscus plant always captures my attention. Exactly why, I'm not sure. Perhaps it's because the flower so easily lends itself to tropical imagery... palm trees, margaritas, fish tacos, the ocean. Or perhaps because it's a delicious beverage and snack... I don't know why, but from these photos I don't really think I need to explain myself.

I've enjoyed photographing Hibiscus flowers for many years. In fact, the images above were captured on REAL FILM! Back in 1999, 2001? I can't remember. It was definitely before I could afford a digital camera. *I even processed those photos myself! :::patting myself on the back::: :)

Anyway, I've tried growing Hibiscus trees indoors several times. No dice. Every single time I buy one, I kill it within 6 months. I was even given one as a gift. Dead!

(The photo above is from the long-passed gift tree.)

My love for Hibiscuses had been squelched by my black thumb until we moved into our house.

Then... dah de da!

I found little Luna Rose and had to have her. She's a perennial gal and so far, so good. We'll see if she returns this spring.

Now I must confess, Luna isn't my favorite. She only slightly reminds me of those feathery tropical beauties. She's more of a caricature of a hibiscus. Flat, wide and sun faded.

Because of Luna's shortcomings, I'll be on the hunt for another Hibiscus tree this spring.

The Garden Gods have shined on me since we bought this house. Maybe, just maybe... I'll be hibiscusuccessful in 2013.

If anyone has tips for growing hibiscuses, please leave me a comment or share a post on your blog. I need all the help I can get!

    1. There are so many gorgeous varieties. One can't help but want them all. I'm not usually a fan of orange, but the orangey/pink one is to die for! Dark purple is one of my favs. too...
